The South-West Conference honored the following students (listed below) at its 2017 Leadership Awards Banquet held at the Villa Bianca in Seymour. The student-athletes receiving this award were selected by their respective schools for the leadership qualities displayed in their athletic accomplishments, in the classroom, in school and in their communities.
Pamela Goodpaster “Outstanding Coach Award”
The Pamela Goodpaster “Outstanding Coach Award” recognizes an individual who has coached a minimum of ten years in the South-West Conference and has displayed the highest ideals of sportsmanship, integrity and leadership. This year the South-West Conference is honored to present the Pamela Goodpaster “Outstanding Coach Award” to Sherrie Zembrzuski of Notre Dame Catholic High School. Sherrie Zembrzuski has earned the respect and admiration of her students, peers and colleagues throughout her career. She is an exemplary role model for all to emulate and is most deserving of this award.
Sherrie Zembrzuski has been involved in the sport of cheerleading as a coach, judge and administrator since she started teaching at Notre Dame in 1977. She was the Head Cheerleading Coach for the Lancers from 1981 to 2010. A tireless advocate for the sport of cheerleading, she has led many initiates to elevate cheerleading to the same status enjoyed by other CIAC sports. She has served on the CAS/CIAC Cheerleading Committee since its inception in 1988 and led the movement to establish CAS/CIAC sponsored state championships in cheerleading. She has served as the Competition Director for the CAS/CIAC State Cheerleading Championships since 1991 and was a member of the NFHS Spirit Rules Committee from 1991 to 1995. Zembrzuski has been a cheerleading competition judge for local, state and national championships for over thirty years. She has conducted rules clinics in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts and has been a summer camp manager for the National Cheerleaders Association. She has served as a judge at the NCA National High School Cheerleading Championships held in Dallas Texas. She also coordinates the judges for the annual SWC championship. She chaired the CHSCA Cheerleading Committee from 2006 to 2010 and continues to serve on the committee that selects the CHSCA All-State squad.
Sherrie Zembrzuski has been recognized on a number of occasions for her contributions to cheerleading. She was awarded the National Federation Interscholastic Spirit Association “Distinguished Service Award” in 1996. She was inducted into the Notre Dame Catholic High School Hall of Fame in 1997. The Sacred Heart University Athletic Department “Outstanding Faculty Award” was presented to her in 2000. She was the CHSCA State Cheerleading “Coach of the Year” and the NFHS’s National Cheerleading “Coach of the Year” in 2005.
The South-West Conference applauds and thanks Sherrie Zembrzuski for all that she has done for her school, the SWC, the CIAC and the NFHS and the student-athletes whose lives she has touched and impacted. She is a wonderful ambassador for the sport of cheerleading and is a tenacious advocate for students who want to participate and excel in cheerleading.
